When Michael Hatfield, of Lee's Summit, accidently dropped his car keys to the bottom of a lake, he used a common garden hose rather than common sense to try to reach them. Using the hose as a snorkel and a twenty pound anchor to aid in the descent, he tried twice to locate the keys. On his second attempt the hose slipped from his mouth, and he became disoriented. A spotter, holding a rope that had been tied to Hatfield's waist, sensed trouble and hauled him to the surface. Hatfield was not breathing and non-responsive for a short time, but eventually began breathing on his own.
